PDF won't open after being downloaded or emailed (blank, error, or 0 bytes)

What's actually wrong

Interrupted downloads, email encoding problems, and cloud-sync conflicts frequently truncate or mangle a PDF so that a reader refuses it. If any real content made it through, the surviving pages can be recovered; if the file arrived as 0 bytes or all zeros, the content never transferred and nothing exists to recover.

Free fixes — try these first

  1. Check the file size (right-click → Properties/Get Info). If it's 0 KB, the download failed — re-download it; there is nothing inside to repair.
  2. Ask the sender to re-send it inside a .zip — zipping protects the file from email encoding damage.
  3. Download from the email's web interface instead of a desktop client (or vice-versa) — one path often succeeds where the other corrupts.
  4. Try opening it in a browser or Google Drive before assuming it's dead.

If the free fixes fail

For a partially-transferred PDF, our analyzer recovers every page that made it through and rebuilds a clean file — and it honestly tells you, for free, when a file is all zeros and truly beyond saving so you don't pay anyone for nothing.

Check what's recoverable — free, in your browser.

Drop the file on our analyzer. It runs locally (the file never leaves your computer) and shows you an honest recovery percentage with a real preview. If nothing is recoverable, we say so plainly — and you pay nothing, ever, for the diagnosis.
