What's actually wrong

Acrobat can't locate the PDF's root object (the catalog that points to the page tree), usually because the trailer or cross-reference table is corrupted. The pages themselves are typically still present in the file — the reader just can't find the entry point. Reconstructing the trailer and index restores access.

Free fixes — try these first

  1. Open the file in Chrome or Edge — if it displays, Print → Save as PDF makes a clean, re-indexed copy.
  2. Upload it to Google Drive and open with the built-in viewer, then download a fresh copy.
  3. Try SumatraPDF or macOS Preview, which tolerate structural damage Acrobat won't.
  4. Re-download / re-transfer the original if it came from email, a USB drive, or a cloud sync — the source may be undamaged.
